Let’s reduce cavitation and turn URN down.

Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) already causes considerable harm to our oceans and their marine fauna, and the situation is getting worse – URN levels are expected to double by 2030 thanks to the major growth in global shipping activity.

Such a development is not sustainable for the ocean and marine fauna, so at Oscar Propulsion we have developed a technology that will mitigate this issue.

Apply PressurePores™

PressurePores technology is the distribution of pressure relief holes strategically located in the tip region of marine propeller blades that can be incorporated during the propeller design or as a retrofit to mitigate tip vortex cavitation and reduce noise for a quieter propeller.

When Oscar’s PressurePores are precisely placed on marine propellers, cavitation – a major source of URN – is reduced significantly. In fact, in full scale sea trials, we’ve seen a 10dB URN reduction in the range most damaging to marine fauna.

And as cavitation also causes serious damage to propellers, rudders and hulls, our technology will extend their life and performance.

Thank you for being quiet

Shipping noise originates from various sources on board a vessel, amongst which the propeller cavitation is considered to dominate the overall radiated noise spectrum above the inception threshold.

By strategically introducing pressure-relieving holes to modify the presence of cavitation, a reduction in the overall cavitation volume can be achieved.

Vessels fitted with our technology will be able to gain entry to environmentally sensitive areas and achieve vital regulatory compliance and sustainability credentials. Ultimately, our PressurePores™ technology will increase their value.

Oscar Patented PressurePores™ technology

URN is caused by cavitation, the formation and explosive collapsing of gas bubbles on the blade surfaces of marine propellers.

When Oscar’s PressurePores™ are precisely placed on marine propellers, cavitation will reduce significantly. Full scale sea trials on a high cavitating propeller have shown a 10dB URN reduction in the range most damaging to marine fauna.

Cavitation also causes serious damage to propellers, rudders and hulls. Our technology will extend their life and performance, and improve onboard comfort too.
